It’s no secret … many New York living spaces aren’t the roomiest homes in the bunch. Several families and young professionals find it hard to accommodate all of their belongings into a small one- or two-bedroom apartment. The space quickly becomes a clutter and it seems like there is no way to relieve the mess – even after throwing out or giving away the unnecessary items you’ve hoarded throughout the years!
We’ve come up with a list of ways that can make your space feel more open (without having to bust down a wall or two). Check it out below!
Bring in Light
Dark colors tend to absorb light and make a room appear smaller. Therefore, make sure to bring light into your space. All-white kitchens are trending, and it is easy to understand why – they just feel more open. Incorporate white countertops, white cabinets, and other design trends to brighten up the room. This will help your kitchen to “breathe” and allow light to pass through and, might we add, it’ll make your Newburgh home look très chic! If you don’t love the idea of a white kitchen, you can still opt for lighter neutral finishes but bring in some warmth or contrst with plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware. Or even add some fun decor pieces!
Incorporate Built-In Seating
Instead of trying to cram in big and cumbersome furniture in your small apartment, get creative and think of ways you can incorporate built-in seating. If you only host a small group of people, you can consider doing away with the typical kitchen table and opt for barstools around the kitchen island. Or, for families of four or more, you can create a built-in dining space with a bench that offers several seats without taking up too much space. It’s a win-win for all!
Take Advantage of Vertical Space
In small-sized homes, the kitchen is often very minimal. Therefore, taking advantage of vertical space is crucial! Don’t be shy, you can grab the stepping stool in the closet to reach those pots and pans in the very back. You’ll be thankful to find that your clutter quickly dissipates when every product and tool has a home. (And that doesn’t include the counter!) There are plenty of hacks and and space saving ideas on Pinterest.
Use See-Through Elements
It may sound kind of obvious, but this isn’t usually the first thing that comes to people’s minds when thinking of ways to relieve space. Having transparent objects in your home, such as chairs, cabinets, etc., give the illusion that your items are almost, well, inexistent! Just be careful if you’re using glass cabinetry not to shove a bunch of things inside that will defeat the purpose of the non-cluttered look.
So, don’t get lazy and overcrowd your New York living space with unnecessary items and objects. Use this summer season to clear the space that you have and remodel your home a bit, even in the smallest of ways! Incorporate these ideas into your new design and we promise your home will feel much lighter!
